Summary of the Film

         Earl (Al Freeman, Jr.) treats Loretta and her family with the same gentle respect and affection. He gives Loretta a job in his "Just Chicken" restaurant without hesitation. Earl also tells them about the generations of their family, the Sinclairs, dating back to their time in slavery before the Civil War.

         Finally, Loretta lives up to Earl's expectations and not only works her way up to a waitress position, but also helps manage the business. Moreover, the autistic Tracy says her first word, and Thomas discovers nature for the first time.

         Unemployed single mother Loretta (Alfre Woodard) lives in the Chicago with her mother Rosa Lynn (Mary Alice) and her two children who are Thomas and Tracy. Thomas (Mpho Koaho) is a good boy and hard-working, taking Polaroids of tourists on Rush Street for $5 to make money. Tracy (Kulani Hassen), the baby, is autistic. For years Rosa Lynn has watched her daughter sleep late, sleep around, get drunk and keep her life on hold.

        Because Rosa Lynn wants to improve the life of Loretta’s family, she sends her troubled daughter and her children away from the big city to live with their uncle Earl who teaches them about their rich heritage in the ancestral home in rural Mississippi. She decides to pawn her prized family heirloom that is a silver candelabra for finance the trip.
